I’m a big fan of Dollar Stores! You never know what you’ll find or where inspiration will strike. My daughter and I were in there the other day and came upon all of these great hair curlers.
Does anyone still use these things? Remember the pink foamy ones with the pink plastic clips that closed them? I can remember trying to sleep with those things in my hair as a little girl. It felt like I was sleeping on a sack of legos. Then I switched to the horribly putrid 80’s perms. Finally, I gave up dreams of curls altogether and embraced my straight-as-a board hair.
As I frequently use objects for art rather than their intended purpose, I snatched up a bunch of these and a fun pink locker mirror with suction cups. So many great colors, textures, and sizes. I knew we could make something cool and 3-D with them.
If you can snag some of these at a local dollar store, you and your kiddos have got to try this!
All you need is a little imagination and a spirit of discovery!
The curler rods bent whichever way we wanted, while the pink rollers slid over them. The black rollers could clip onto the rods or other rollers. There were tons of building options.
I had no plan when I bought the mirror, but it worked really well as a base. We found we could use either side. We attached some curlers to the suction cups.
And when we built on the mirror side, we found we could ATTACH OUR SCULPTURE TO THE WALL!!!! BONUS! My daughter thought that was the coolest thing ever!
I kind of agreed with her!
Although we didn’t try it yet, I am sure the curlers would be suitable for use in the bathtub, too. Double-bonus!
If you are looking for a mess-free project, then this has your name all over it! (I’m thinking TRIPLE-bonus!) Plus, any kind of sculpture-building is teaching your kids about height, width and depth, the 3-D’s of sculpture.
So try this project at home and tell me what you think!
